WHY?
Why walk from Dallas, Texas to Akron, Indiana?
by

Dorothy Martin
I received a call from a reporter of the Oklahoman newspaper while
walking through the Muskogee, Oklahoma area.  He questioned me
quite extensively about the reason for our walk and suggested that
it was either for ego or for personal gain.  He couldn't believe that
anyone would make that large expenditure of time and money
without an agenda.  Our desire to inspire others to take their health
seriously didn't cut it for him and neither did he believe that anyone
would find it a fun adventure.

After talking with him, I searched myself for answers to his
questions.  I had never thought of the motivation of my heart in the
form of words but I decided it was a question that many may be
asking.  However, before I was able to put my thoughts into words
this article appeared in the Dallas Morning News/Richardson
News/Letters to The Editor.  I have never met nor talked with the
writer of this article.  But her letter explains better than I can put into
words why I would want to walk 1000 miles in 100 days.

The following letter has been reprinted with the permission of the
Dallas Morning News/Richardson News and Carmethia Sanders:

                                    THE WILL TO LIVE LIFE

I am writing in regards to  your article about “A Thousand Miles for
Love and Charity“.  After reading what the Martins were doing it
inspired me to want to help myself.  I was diagnosed with lupus and
I have found it to be very hard to exercise.  I am a thirty-four year-
old woman who has a disease but it is up to me whether I let it
    control my life.

So far I have started to walk a mile a day.  I can feel the difference
all over, not just physically but more mentally with the will to
overcome my obstacles down the road that I  might encounter.  So
what I want to say to all your readers is we should not let our health
define our life.  I hope to one day be able to walk a thousand miles
with the Martins but until that day I encourage everyone to keep
    living.
